Disappointing hotel stay
Arrived to an empty check in counter & after standing around for a few minutes I approached the concierge desk. The concierge came out from their office within a few seconds & was friendly, he then rushed off to find someone to help with check in. I paid for 'valet parking' at the hotel only for them to leave it where I parked it in the waiting bay overnight. In the morning I was advised they were 'bringing the car around', then was given the keys and told the car was 'over there' where I had parked the night before. The room was dated and worn, standing in the bath/shower creaked and groaned sounding like you were about to fall through the floor, the tv was poorly tuned, the beds were uncomfortable and the combination of workers/garbage collectors below the room was stupidly loud. On a positive, when I first arrived at the check in counter I noticed they had displays with the weather forecast & the the lobby was well appointed. That was before checkin and where my review took a negative turn. In summary disappointed with the stay & do not plan to return. A major reason the hotel was chosen was proximity to ride the cable car as we planned to visit Zealandia. Well we missed out on that too because that car had to be out too early to avoid a second charge for another days 'valet' parking. Instead we drove, used the free parking and had a thouroughly enjoyable day at Zealandia including lunch.

OVERRATED tired hotel,Try something else,
This hotel is over rated!!! James Cook Grand Chancellor is very tired. Only one lift operating from street to lobby with at least a half hour wait. One lift from lobby to all floors out of two is also not working, making this an actual work and safety issue. This has been going on for a long time as laminated signs show age. Reception staff are unhelpful even if room are prepaid. Especially a worker called Deepthy and unfortunately this narcistic receptionist was on duty 3 out of the 4 days stay. Concierge the same. Lost purse (all cards and dollars) on arrival and although room fully paid for in advanced were unwilling to let me in. Had to file a police report and have police legitimate unfortunate event. Scrapped up Australian dollars as room deposit, enough for one night but was locked out the next day, even though concierge said I wouldn't be before I left room in the morning. Made to feel like a criminal in an emergency situation as an international traveller who had just lost everything. Would not let me run a tab for food even though had proof with emergency travel insurance coming through next day. Front of house pull this whole company down, a review of staff needed especially as this is an Accore ancillary. Rooms hot and aircon didn't work. Cleaners couldn't change settings. Mould in tired bathrooms. TV distaughted and contrast poor, free wifi kept dropping out. Had a half hour wait with checkout so they could physically check room for damage. Try else where.

Old Hotel: a poor layout & inadequate facilities
The best thing about this hotel is the location, right in the middle of town, walking distance to many things including the cable car. That is about it. The bad begins with a terrible layout of elevators, hallways, dining facilities. The elevators are old, slow and clunky. You need to take one form the street level up to the lobby but to get to it from the street you need to walk through a dingy food court area. The gym has 3 pieces of equipment and no treadmill. It is in a small dark room. To get to the restaurant, you need to walk down a back corridor, feels like you are walking through the kitchen service area to get to the entrance. Even though the restaurant is on a top floor 15 or 16, the views are limited and it is dark. The food is only average. Don't eat there. The room was adequate, dated but clean with a perfectly acceptable bathroom, though small. The single most frustrating thing was the "free" internet. You are limited to 2 devices and the speed is very, very slow. If you try to disconnect one device to replace it with another, you can't do that yourself. Need to call the desk to reset your account. All very annoying. We would not stay here again.

Good location
We stayed this hotel ln 31st Dec. Closed to everything so the location was great. We came by our car so we need a parking but the rate is $30 or so. We just parked on the roed as it was Sunday so they didn't charge for that. We have got only one bath robe in the room and wondered why only one. We asked to the staff but he said "all we can do is we will bring it to you in tomorrow morning" He didn't even answered our question. We were checking out next morning so obviously it too late anyway. We put "Do not disturb" out of our door but around 8:00 or 9:00 o'clock they knocked the door. We didn't answer so they called us. This is not acceptable and not professional behavior. We have stayed many hotels but this was the worst front staff. We would not come back to this hotel.

Average room in the corner. So small. Not a very nice bathroom, the grout was in need of a clean. Very claustrophobic feeling and the door to the room was not clear if it was locked or not. Won't be staying here again. Parking also not included and is actually a separately located facility next to the venue, but not very clearly stated, you'd have to get in and out of your car in a very awkward and narrow visitor bay to then find out you have to park away and then lug your luggage up flights of stairs (no elevator) to find the entrance again which was really not ideal when arriving on a 10pm ferry with a very tired partner. Also hard to find and not in an ideal location to anything exciting.
