I've stayed in my fair share of places world-wide. Some have been dumps and some have been outstanding. Rydges Melbourne was flatly in the middle. Which is fine. I think. It was close to the Princess Theatre so that was convenient. And there were a number of great eateries nearby. Also a plus. But how many stars does that get a place; simply being near other excellent places? The rooms were clean but odd. Furniture was odd, there were strange ramps in the room and the showerhead and the toilet were in such odd locations that you needed to hug the walls to use them. Is this a major issue? Of course not. But factor in the mould on the bathroom ceiling and the steep-rate-per-room-given-what-you're-getting, I left feeling bummed out. The staff were lovely. And the skies were clear. But while I stayed there, I couldn't help but think of better places I'd stayed at in Melbourne.

    Poor 2.0
Expensive and really, really NOT worth the money
$500 a night and the housekeeping was terrible. Left the dirty room service dishes sitting on the lounge room table all day and left the folded bathroom towels on the bathroom floor. Seriously. There's the actual shelf for towels, a mini-wall and the bathroom bench but no, just leave the towels folded up on the bathroom floor and leave the tray with leftovers and dirty dishes sitting on the table. Not My Job apparently. Nice. Of course the next day housekeeping didn't even come at all. I get back to the room after a very long day and the room is completely untouched. Front desk says well we can send someone up now. $500 a night and I have to ask if they could please make up the room. Are you kidding me??? Room service menu is definitely designed to force you to eat at the restaurant; only full meals until 11pm when they'll allow you to order snacks. Go to Starbucks next door; it's not haute cuisine but it's 5 times cheaper than the overcooked fish served with tomato sauce. $500 a night, did I mention that? I had to stay an extra night and they moved me to a new room - right next door to the lifts. How this room (1701 by the way) is allowed to be rented I have no idea. Whenever someone takes any of the lifts the entire room rattles. Got about 2 hours of sleep as around 3am a lot fewer people were using the lifts. The worst and most over-priced hotel experience I've had in Melbourne and I stay in the city a LOT. Don't go to Rydges, it's awful.

    Good 6.0
The size of the room perfect and on the surface looked very modern and spacious. On closer inspection you could see the room was tried and in need of some TLC. Condensation a major problem , causing Mildew on the net curtains, shower leaked around the door Frame meaning we had to use the towels to mop up the water, although the showers water pressure was excellent. . You could see that leak may of been a problem for a while as the plaster work near the shower required attention. The heating/ cooling systems were very old and extremely noisy and not particularly effective. I did request a quite room but found the one we were allocated far from quiet being next to the lifts and overlooking many external aircon units, did make getting a good nights sleep even with ear plugs difficult It was very clean and we did have plenty of towels, furniture bed and bedding perfect Reception staff and car park staff excellent and the location was perfect Just a shame about the noise condensation and maintenance issues

    Exceptional 10.0
I have stayed at the Rydges a few times before and as always was not disappointed. I would like to pass on a special mention to the gentleman that checked us in. I didn't catch his name but he was incredibly friendly and helpful especially after our shocking experience at another hotel. We had booked the Rydges about 20 minutes before we turned up to check in and drop off our luggage as we knew that it would be too early for the room to be ready. He looked for a room just in case and when one wasn't available helped to arrange our luggage. In the time that my partner and I freshened up and had our luggage ready for storage he had checked our reservation again and now a room was available. It was the best service I have received from hotel staff and I hope that he understands how much he made our day because we already had a rough start to our Melbourne trip after a delayed flight and our other hotel reservation being cancelled without letting us know. I would recommend to anyone the Rydges and have already told many people about how awesome our check in experience was. The other staff members that we met over the next four days were just as lovely and eager to help.

Bed was super soft and comfortable. Room was spotless Nice big Tv Wonderful view of the city Bath tub was something I wouldn't use... all enamel peeled and gross. Food and drinks at mini bar very expensive but enough little long life milks for several cups of tea or coffee. Toilet being behind the door on a angle is a little difficult to maneuver with any mobility problems as is trying to step into the shower inside the bath. 3 or 4 towels would be great instead of 2 real small ones. well located china town directly over the road. Room was nice and warm when we arrived which was great as it was 4c outside and we were frozen to the bone
