Poor 2.0
Not a 5 star hotel
The whole stay was a disaster and disappointment. After returning to the UK from a business trip, I decided to surprise my wife with a weekend in the City of Manchester, to celebrate our wedding anniversary and her birthday, therefore I booked the hotel while I was abroad. Arriving at the hotel, I had no help or advice about the parking or how to unload our bags, etc. The Principal’ is advertised as a 5* hotel. I stayed in many Hotels around the world, including Manchester and London, and ‘The principal’ is definitely not 5* standard throughout the whole hotel. The room had no ‘air conditioning/heating and unbelievably cold, the bathroom had no extractor, therefore after a shower, the whole bathroom and the room was full of steam, impossible to have a shave or use the mirrors, and no mini-bar. Only one small bar of soap and the rest of the toiletries where neither here or there. We asked why the room had no heating or air con, we were told it was the nature of the building and asked if we would like an electric heater (??) an electric heater in a 5* hotel’ (??), my wife declined this as it makes the room very dry and dusty, I woke up the next morning withwith 5 flea bites in my arm, face and head, although I have no complaints about the cleanliness of the room. whole place was turned into a Night Club, (or more like a rave!) music so loud, played by a D.J. that talking was impossible, drunk people all around the bar area, dancing and staggering around...........

Comfortable Room, Genuine Friendly Attentive Staff
Reception staff very welcoming and guaranteed me a quiet room away from the bar had been reserved for me as requested. Same staff very attentive to any requests. Room 161 was very nice and although no view with window being behind tower and locating centre of building near lift it provided the peace and quiet I was looking for. On entering the room there was an issue with the extractor fan making noise and not stopping for over half an hour but when reported downstairs to reception the same checking in lady (think Amy!) had maintenance guys at my room within 10 minutes to fix it and issue hardly then seemed one by their own professionalism. Later my TV signal was lost and again a technical guy was at my room in under 10 minutes to find fault in less than a minutes [seems connection to wall had come out]. I found the room very comfortable and quiet for me and the staff could not be more helpful when requesting extra sugar etc. They do provide a little carton of complimentary milk in fridge which was nice, sadly I could not use it as although was in date it was sadly looking off in cup so just went out and bought a fresh carton from supermarket just over road. Lady from housekeeping was also very accommodating and would like to make a special thanks to her and reception staff including check out who could not be more accommodating. Would definitely use this hotel again. Overall enjoyed my staff.

Poor 2.0
Style over substance
Credit where credit is due, this is a very stylishly refurbished property, impressive even. But that's the only positive about it. Toilet didn't flush. Was kind of fixed but still didn't work well at all. Light bulbs out in the bathroom. No milk in the room, took 20 minutes to get some, and that was after chasing reception for it. Just wanted some tea at the end of a long working day. Just enough tea and coffee for one each, just. Took nearly five minutes and numerous tries to get the front desk to answer the phone. Hairdryer blows cold air, luckily I've got short hair but that took long enough. No minibar. Day two: Housekeeping took ages to clean the room while we waited outside, only to discover no fresh towels and the bed linen hadn't been changed. Toilet still not fixed. Not sure what housekeeping were doing in the room for so long, I can make a bed in less than 5 minutes which it seems was all they did. Didn't replenish the milk again! Get back from a long day at work, just want to relax in my room... oh no. The bar downstairs is playing extremely loud music which upstairs in our room isn't music, just boom boom boom. Called reception to ask for it to be turned down, promised it would be but nothing happens. Went on all night. Never was there any warning about this on the hotel website or the booking site, or when checking in. They should check out some of their competitors who warn their guests (and I often still stay there because I know what to expect).

Exceptional 10.0
Excellent hotel, but a few niggles
First the good points. The hotel itself is an amazing piece of architecture. Its recently been redecorated and modernised, but the art deco detail has been carefully retained. We had a deluxe double room, which was spacious and comfortable. The bathroom was also spacious and featured a superb 'drencher' style shower which took a bit of working out as it had three valves plus the temperature control. Once mastered, it was invigorating to use. We loved it. The towels are changed daily and the usual shower gel etc are provided. We stayed for an evening meal which included various tapas style dishes and a bottle of wine. The food was delicious, the serving size just right, and the staff were excellent. We then moved to the bar and had numerous gin cocktails. Apart from the queueing (the bar is open to the public) it was also very good. A bit noisy but enjoyable once we had found a seat. The bad bit. Breakfast was a disaster. At £16/each I was expecting so much more. The food was barely warm, half the cooked food had run out and took a long time to be replenished, and the plates weren't cleared away from our table between courses. It was a shocker. The only redemption was that the food itself was high quality. Nevertheless I'd only give the breakfast service 2/5. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will be returning, but if the breakfast service is as poor next time I'll be quite vocal about it, which is a shame as the evening service was superb and very polished.

Poor breakfast experience
Our breakfast experience was a complete disaster and spoilt our experience of the hotel. On Saturdays, breakfast is available until 10:30, therefore, we arrived in the dining room at 09:40 but joined a queue for the dining room as no tables were available. We were asked to wait in the bar area until a table was available, which took around 35 minutes. When we were shown to our table, the table was not prepared, the left over milk from the previous diner was still there and we didn't have cups, saucers or crockery. We had no waiting on staff over seeing our table and had to approach staff for crockery and cutlery that still didn't arrive, therefore, we had to take some from the table next to us. The hotel had a buffet style breakfast with an additional menu to order specific food items. When we spoke to the staff about placing an order, we were told that we were too late as the kitchen was closed, even though we explained that we had been waiting for a table for 35 minutes. We therefore went to the buffet section, only to discover hardly any food left, nothing had been replenished and we had to search the area for crockery to use. After speaking to the head waiter, he responded to our complaint and arranged for some foods to be brought out but not the full selection. I must say that the food that we ate was very nice but when we asked for tea and coffee, we were then informed that the hot water machine had broken down.
