Superb 9.0 From 594 reviews

Poor 2.0
Overpriced for the room size and cleanliness.
When we arrived the concierge didn't greet us to park our car, we checked in and walked into a very small room with some furniture clearly displaced throughout the room with very dirty carpet being revealed in many areas as well as a pile of plaster from which they had obviously replaced one of the lights with no cleaning afterwards. We orderd room service which was a $36 cheeseburger and a $34 chicken SANDWICH, we didn't even finish a 1/4 of each and were beyond disappointed.. A burger from macdonalds has much more appeal both visually and with taste and quality. Being a chef myself, I was looking forward to ordering food from the restaurant of a 5 star hotel. As for breakfast (I paid for when we booked,) when asking where to go for it we weren't told that on Fridays they shut 30 minutes earlier so we also missed out on that with a simple "breakfast stops earlier on Fridays." Starving from the incredibly horrid room service we never ate and missing the breakfast, we would NEVER stay here. Unless you're wearing priceless clothes don't expect to be treated equally or for the staff to respect you, The bigger girl at reception had a tone of sarcasm in everything she said and had nothing polite or accomodating to say. TERRIBLY HORRID!!! A 3 star western in would have been better.

Exceptional 10.0
Excellent stay in a beautiful historic building
My wife and I stayed there on one Thursday night for our 3rd anniversary. Before checking ourselves in, we had some pre-dinner snacks and wines at the Bluestone Wine Lounge located in the lower floor/basement and it's a very relaxing atmosphere with a good selection of wines and cheeses. We stayed at an Executive Room with a balcony overlooking the beautiful view of hotel's atrium. The room was spacious with elegant deco and our bed was very comfortable. While you might hear some small noise coming from the Bluestone Wine Lounge but it's very quiet by the time we're in bed. The hotel is nicely located in Melbourne CBD, only a 10mins walk from Southern Cross Station (where you'll arrive using airport bus/SkyBus) and a short 10mins walk over the Yarra River to the Crown Casino complex on Southbank. While you're staying here, also try visiting the Lui Bar at night (located in the building right next to the hotel), which offers a beautiful panoramic view of Melbourne CBD from the 55th floor, or you can try "Vue de monde", one of the best restaurant in Melbourne/Australia which also located on the same floor as Lui Bar. We had our anniversary dinner there and it's highly recommended! We'd definitely be coming back here again for our next date night in Melbourne.

Very good 8.0
Nice hotel
When we walked in we were overwhelmed with the beauty of the building. However when we checked in we were surrounded by patrons making complaints which concerned us. Our room was not ready and had to wait 20 minutes but the staff were really nice and without saying anything we were given a late 2pm check out the next day at no charge. When we got to our room it was really nice and clean we did notice that the bathroom was getting a little outdated and perhaps was in need of a renovation. Everything was perfect. The buffet breakfast was fair as the eggs were cold and the danish had that taste that they were frozen and heated up. Overall we were very happy with our nights stay. The staff were really nice and professional.

Fair 4.0
Disappointed for Intercontinental standard
For the price we paid to stay at this hotel, we were very disappointed. Despite having many rooms available, we were put on the first floor of the side of the hotel that was under very heavy construction. Carpets were ripped out in the hallways leading to our room and we were woken to the heavy sounds and sight of construction workers very early in the morning who were able to look straight into our window. Our room was also very small and pokey. Nothing like the standard of other like hotels we have stayed at in Melbourne before. Despite our request to be moved being fulfilled the next day, I would've thought an offer to upgrade us or provide breakfast complimentary etc might have been forthcoming given the circumstances. We were just given a similar small sized room on the other side of hotel. Will go back to Grand Hyatt next time.

Almost perfect!
Enjoyable stay. However we were without power as nobody suggested we switch on power board in closet, until morning of our overnight stay we discovered it. So drinks in fridge were warm and no music, no power to charge up phones. we got in late, exhausted went to bed. Checked again in the morning, read hotel info booklet but nothing noted about the safety switch in wardrobe which was off, .This we discovered on our own, but at time of leaving. Apart from this, we were pleased with service and fairly pleased with breakfast in the morning, our table had half bottle of water which only filled up 1 glass, and our pepper mill dispenser was empty. Water bottle filled on request , but couldn't get waiters attention for pepper. Small stuff , I know, but its the details, that change a good rating into an excellent rating.
