The property is stunning and the amenities great. It’s definitely worth passing by and exploring the building. Spending the night, on the other hand, was a different story. The staff and the service was very disappointing. The concierge was not at all enthusiastic to greet us at the check in ( we had to wait about 10 minutes until they finished a staff to staff member conversation) and not willing to go a single small step to show any care beyond the basic pleasantries displayed with a ‘must do’ attitude rather than interest to provide good customer service. There was no attempt to introduce and show the grounds and it felt like a generic tired hotel rather than a bed and breakfast where you expect more human interaction than a big chain accommodation ( understanding and complying with the current COVID situation). The breakfast service was fit for a cheaper motel ( yogurt and granola that you would purchase at a passing gas station) and it felt like COVID restrictions were used as an excuse to economize on the cost and a good way of avoiding taking the time and energy to organize a proper eating experience ( e.g. slotted ’sit at a table’ times). We felt the breakfast was a failure. Not sure how breakfast is served in times other than COVID, but we felt like we were cheated out of it for the price that we paid for the stay. Overall, the experience was of utter carelessness to us as guests and we would not recommend Merrill house as a stay of your choice.

Was quite disappointed with our stay at the Merrill House. Was expecting a lot more for the price we paid. One of our most expensive hotel cost for a night and it was nothing special. We had decided to splurge for our anniversary. The house was nice but service was standard and the breakfast was delivered to our door in a paper bag consisting of a small yogurt, juice, banana and an apple to share for 2 and not fresh small croissants in sealed plastic!! The reviews raved about their breakfast??? We had a room at the front of the house and it was quite noisy with people coming and going and the music system was loud so had to get up and ask them to turn it off at 11:30 as could not get to allow. Had expected a lot more from our stay and will not be back or recommend to anyone else. Overpriced!!

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for 3 days in August. The property has undergone a massive renovation in the past couple of years and it shows - this is a heritage building and the owners have done an amazing job maintaining its character and charm, yet adding a few modern touches and interior design elements. The grounds are immaculately groomed, property is clean and welcoming. However, I can’t give the hotel the highest rating - for all 3 days of our stay there was a mix up with our breakfast. First, the room rate included breakfast, which means it should automatically be served every morning. As the hotel had to make changes due to new COVID-19 rules, theY now deliver a prepackaged breakfast to your door at the predetermined time, which they put on our file upon check-in. Yet for 3 days in row, our breakfast did not arrive at the agreed upon time and we had to go to the kitchen, who informed us that the were not aware of our order. This of course was followed up with the reception desk every day, who apologized, appeared to make a note and the next morning the situation repeated again, and again. This was a small, but important detail and should be a simple fix (one would think) as the property markets itself as a premium hotel, and definitely charges as such. That said, we had dinner at the hotel restaurant, and it was excellent. The chef knows what he is doing and we had a nice relaxing evening. I would recommend this hotel, but pay attention to detail

This is a beautiful property! Gordon welcomed us and provided a tour of the stunning house. Hands down the best breakfast I have ever had included at a hotel. we had a group of 4 girls and the room with 2 queen beds accommodated us comfortably.

A lovely period home, totally renovated over the past 3-4 years! Nice furnishings and super comfy beds! Lots of books and side rooms to sit and read or just watch the fireplace! Our welcome at arrival & registration was kind, attentive and Matt made us feel right at home and special! Breakfasts were amazing! Lemon ricotta pancakes, gravlax &poached eggs on sourdough toast, croissants, French press coffee, lovely tea setups- everything is first class! Elizabeth was just so kind & attentive at breakfast and Lili was in charge of the kitchen! There is also a top notch restaurant with a fabulous menu and a wine list that is amazing! Very imaginative menu and all was first rate! Worth the trip to Picton just to eat here! One tiny little wrinkle, and it was a minor one, regarded a balky thermostat one day, making for coolish temps in the room but great for sleeping! Treat yourselves to a pampering experience and come here!
