The little (and the big things) - disappointed
We had a dissappointing stay. Have previously stayed at other Sofitels and enjoyed them. We booked to celebrate our anniversary and a birthday - was called 2 days prior by an employee to confirm our booking, was told that a the customer relationship manager (or similar title) would "do something special", but there was nothing at all done, I didn't have expectations prior but when told something like that it creates an expectation (e.g. a bottle of sparkling awaiting us etc). I had requested and been told we would get a room looking over the river, but we could barely see it from a corner window. The room was very tired, lots of chips out of the sinks etc. Poor extras, e.g coffee in the room was old sachets of nestle instant coffee. No plunger, nothing nice. The gym was small and in poor condition, e.g a cable machine with no connections (didn't work), the TV by the weights rather than cardio equipment, TVs on cardio machines didn't work. No room to stretch and do floor work. The customer service was average. I called the operator 3 times over a period of 40 minutes and had no one pick up. There was more I don't have time for. We likely won't go back and I wouldn't recommend it.

Poor 2.0
Outdated, noisy & poor customer service
This hotel is very dated. Great location but rooms are still from the 90's. Bathroom is small and has the shower over the bath (seriously for a 5 star hotel) and is very old and outdated. Bed was comfortable. Worst part of our stay was the noise, at 7am the contractors started work in the room next door, whilst I appreciate work needs to be done starting at 7am in a room that is occupied next door is ridiculous. I called the hotel reception and told them, they did ask the contractors to stop but I said it was too late, we had been disturbed now and were awake. When sitting in the lobby I overhead the duty manager say they our room (3618) has complained about the noise and the say sorry to us and if we wanted to escalate the matter to call her out, then she said they would not offer anything. When we checked out the duty manager to apologise for the noise, offered nothing, we were in a rush so we moved on. Pretty poor service I reckon, they could have offered something as compensation. Great location, great views from the rooms but very outdated and I would prefer to stay at any other 5 star hotel instead of here.

Still charges almost $30 per day for internet!!
The Sofitel is well maintained, well located and the staff efficient and friendly - although why the General Manager insists they persevere with the ridiculous 'Bonjour' greeting still is beyond me. Yes I get that Sofitel is owned by Accor and they are French. But when clearly the vast majority of the staff do not speak French, to have them parrot 'Bonjour' in a variety of bad accents is cringe-inducing. .Interestingly, every staff member I asked about it said they found it embarrassing. But the main reason I would not stay at Sofitel again is that they still insist on charging $29 a day for internet when almost all their competitors include it as part of the room charge - as it should be in 2017. Yes I understand they lost a big chunk of revenue when the rip-off that was hotel phone charges when everyone got mobiles. And yes in the early days of the net, before free Wi-Fi zones were everywhere, it made sense for a hotel to claw back some revenue by charging for internet. But that was ten years ago. And no, I don't want to have to sign up to the Accor Group loyalty program to get the charge taken off. It shouldn't be there for a start. Makes me wonder how much later Sofitel kept charging for hot water when it became standard in hotels 100 years ago...

Exceptional 10.0
Weekend oasis
The Sofitel on Collins is our hotel of choice whenever we have the chance to escape to Melbourne for a weekend or minibreak. This trip did not disappoint. Checkin is always seemless, and an unexpected upgrade to a corner suite was a lovely surprise. The hotel offers exactly what we seek - a quite, luxurious space that allows you to feel tucked away from the world; super comfy rooms with amazing views that can be enjoyed for hours, in the day or nighttime, especially nice with a room service cocktail. Great food and beverage options inhouse (No. 35 has the most amazing breakfast room views across the city to the bay and an extensive buffet spread of delicious foods to select from at your leisure) and with a tram or taxis at the doorstep you have all that Melbourne offers within easy reach. The hotel position within Collins Place means you can see a movie, have a meal or drink, shop for clothes and jewellery or have a cup of tea under the atrium and still be within the cocoon of relaxation if you really wish to hide away. And Sofi's lounge offers delicious and generous high tea options if you're up for some socialising. This hotel is the complete package and we can't wait to return.

Proximate to the Princess Theatre
I first stayed in this hotel 20 years ago, and most recently 13 years ago. Then, I was extremely impressed - I'd go so far as to say it was one of the best hotels in which I'd stayed, anywhere in the world. And while time has marched on, sadly, aspects of this hotel remain stuck in the early 2000s. While the hotel staff were excellent, the room itself was much less than I was expecting and, frankly, less than a hotel of this calibre should provide. The decor is dated, the bathroom in particular was very poor design - for instance, it has a double sink, but the second sink cannot be used without kneeling on the toilet. We could hear noise from rooms adjacent to ours (including the sounds of neighbouring toilets flushing and showers draining). While the hotel's website carries photographs of a renovated room, which was most certainly not representative of the room in which we stayed. Despite the fact that there are eight of them, it seemed always to take minutes for an elevator to arrive - on one occasion, the lift broke down altogether (and I note that another was out of action). The breakfast buffet is average at best, and is the restaurant is crammed to the gills, making it very difficult to navigate from table to buffet. On the whole, just OK - but the product offered does not match the name over the door.
