Where to stay in Alibaug

Exploring Alibaug

Along the Konkan Coast of India’s Maharashtra region is the town of Alibaug and its sweeping beaches. This lightly-travelled corner of southern India is a fantastic place to explore if you like miles of empty beaches, ancient temples and Maharajah-era forts. The residents of Mumbai, 100kms to the north, know it well and use the resort beaches here as weekend getaways. The eclectic area around Alibaug is also home to one of the country’s largest Jewish communities, evident in its famous Bet El Synagogue.

The beaches are the big attraction along this stretch of the Konkan Coast. There are literally dozens to choose from, some heavily developed and others virtually empty. Alibaug Beach is a nice sandy beach where you can head to for some relaxing and sunset watching.

- Alibag Fort

The Indian coastline is dotted with fortresses, some built by the Portuguese and others by the Raja kings. Kolaba is the nearest to Alibaug. Built in 1680, it has seen plenty of action and remains in good condition for visitors who want to scramble around the ramparts and imagine another era of colonialism and warlords.
