Exploring Barcelona

Barcelona exemplifies the best of what Europe has to offer. This is especially true in the warmer months when streets, pedestrianised or otherwise, are bustling with life. In Spain's second largest city, visitors find world-class museums, pleasant walks, a beautiful beach, outdoor cafés and some of the best restaurants and bars in the country.

Those staying in the modernist art nouveau district of Eixample are luckier as they are treated to the landmarks that catapulted Barcelona to many people's bucket lists. Mid-range to high-end accommodation options are available here and in the adjacent district, Barcelona's old town of Ciutat Vella. You can book a few nights in the Mandarin Oriental Barcelona or the Majestic Hotel & Spa Barcelona, both located along one of the city's major avenues, Passeig de Gracia.

Sights nearby

There are many things of interest to visitors in the areas of Eixample and Ciutat Vella. Walking around the area is particularly recommended in order to take in the sights of the beautiful Catalonian capital.

Sagrada Familia
The mere mention of Barcelona conjures up majestic creations of art and architecture by some of the best artists to ever live in Europe. The first building that will come up whenever Barcelona's architecture is being talked about is almost always the Sagrada Familia. This beautiful cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the brainchild of the city's most famous son, Antonio Gaudi. Many who gaze at this beautiful building say it is made of bones because of the anthropomorphism Gaudi used in the design. Unfortunately, Gaudi did not live long enough to see his masterpiece finished. This, however, does not stop the hordes of visitors who come to marvel at this grandiose church.

La Pedrera
Second in any list of Barcelona's beautiful buildings is La Pedrera, also known as Casa Mila. Like the Sagrada Familia, the building's design is also the work of Antonio Gaudi and a UNESCO World Heritage site. La Pedrera literally means ‘the Quarry’. The name is attributed to the bold stone facade of the building. It has no straight lines or angles to speak of because of the waving and undulating design of its interiors. The building is found right along the Passeig de Gracia.

Hospital de Sant Pau
It is a testament to Barcelona's beautiful architecture that even a hospital has become a tourist attraction because of its stunning design. The hospital was founded in the 1400s, but its current design dates back to the 1900s. The hospital is the work of Lluis Domènech i Montaner, a well-known Catalan modernist architect. The hospital grounds can be accessed via Carrer Sant Quinti in the El Guinardo neighborhood immediately north of Eixemple.

Eating and drinking and shopping nearby

The Eixemple neighbourhood alone has many recommended restaurants and drinking joints which cater to both locals and tourists. La Flauta along Carrer Aribau serves up delicious Catalan fare, making it a favourite among local business owners of the area. Those who would like to splurge a bit can book a table at Cinc Sentits, a recently opened restaurant that has gained recognition because of the innovation it has brought to the Catalan food scene. Along Carrer Enrique Granados, the excellent wine bar Smooth offers some of the best bottles from all over Spain.

Public transport

One of the best ways to get around the more interesting parts of the city is the Barcelona Bus Turistic. It is a hop-on, hop-off bus covering many of the city's main sights, including of course those that are in the Eixample. Bikes are becoming popular as well with visitors of the city, with some agencies even offering sightseeing tours by bike. Otherwise, the Barcelona Metro is always there to take you to the Sagrada Familia or the Hospital de Sant Pau, each with its own metro stop.
