Exploring Chatuchak Weekend Market

Whatever tourists want, and whatever tourists need, they are sure to find it at Chatuchak weekend market. Also known as JJ Market, the Chatuchak weekend market is found in northern Bangkok, about 20 minutes by train from the centre of the city. Like its name suggests, it operates only on weekends between 09:00 and 18:00, and boasts more than 15,000 shops, making it the world’s largest weekend marketplace.

The market was first established following WWII, but was held at Sanam Luang near the King’s palace. After the market grew substantially, it was moved to its current site in the late 1970s, and nowadays welcomes 200,000 visitors per day. Everything from handicrafts, clothing, artefacts, pets, food, and household merchandise are available within JJ Market. A range of accommodation can be found close to the weekend market, and hotels here are generally cheaper than hotels in downtown Bangkok.

Sightseeing near Chatuchak Weekend Market

Even though the Chatuchak weekend market is Northern Bangkok’s most visited attraction, there are several other landmarks that are worthy of visiting nearby.

- Chatuchak Park

Chatuchak Park is one of Bangkok’s best places to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. Constructed upon a former railway yard, the park is among Bangkok’s oldest green spaces. It includes an artificial lake and a fountain, plus several miles of walking or jogging tracks. It is a popular place among travellers who have just spent hours strolling through the busy sois of Chatuchak weekend market. Chatuchak Park MRT and Mo Chit BTS stations are both located just outside the park, so getting here is simple. It is possible to stay at one of many hotels close to Chatuchak Park, such as Mystic Place and M2 de Bangkok.

- Children’s Discovery Center

Resting across from Chatuchak weekend market, the Children’s Discovery Center is an interactive museum that provides the perfect environment for a family day out. Altogether, there are more than 120 activities across eight different galleries. Displays cover themes such as nature, science, environmental studies, and the human body. Admission is cheap but tourists need to be aware that most of the collections are displayed in Thai language rather than English.

- State Railway Hall of Fame and Museum

In the western area of Chatuchak Park, the State Railway Museum is an interesting venue that highlights the history of transit operations in Thailand. It was first built in 1990 and now displays steam engines, model trains, and information on historical collections. Any train buff will adore this fascinating site, which is just 10 minutes on foot from Chatuchak weekend market.

Transportation near Chatuchak Weekend Market

Getting to the market is relatively easy. Both the Mo Chit BTS and Kamphaeng Phet MRT stations connect Chatuchak weekend market with nearby hotels and downtown Bangkok. Chatuchak Park is located at the eastern entrance to the marketplace, a few minutes’ walk from the heart of the market. The Bangkok Metropolitan bus network also provides routes to Chatuchak, but traffic is usually very congested on weekends therefore buses should only be used as a final resort.
