Where to stay in Lake Maggiore

Lake Maggiore Hotels

Lake Maggiore - based in northern Italy - is a huge shimmering stretch of pastel-blue waters, surrounded by charming waterfront towns and bordered by green-washed rocky hills and mountains. This area combines rustic rural life with the idyllic, sun-struck Italian outdoors. Nature enthusiasts can indulge in outdoor activities, from hiking through the forests to kayaking across the calm Lake Maggiore itself. There’s plenty of top heritage sites for history-buffs, too.

Things to see

Begin your bright and balmy Lake Maggiore morning by soaking up some of the area’s top historic sights. Pay a visit to the Rocca Borromeo di Angera, a looming lakeside castle perched on a rocky, tree-studded outcrop. Wander through this 13th century stone-walled marvel and climb the towering turrets, where you’ll enjoy immense lake views. There’s also an eccentric doll museum onsite. Afterwards, catch a boat to the magical Isola Bella - one of a few eden-like islands in the lake - and see the Borromeo Palace. Today, you can tour the ornate rooms and halls of this grand red-roofed palace, and spend a sun-kissed afternoon lounging in its Italianate botanic gardens. Afterwards, island-hop to the nearby Isola Madre and Isola Borromee, 2 other-worldly paradises brimming with quaint cafes and exotic plants. Finally, finish your day with a dip in the pure Lake waters, or hire a kayak and explore the shoreline.
