Exploring Los Angeles

Los Angeles has certainly come a long way since its humble beginnings as the southern end point for the United States transcontinental railroad. Nowadays, this quintessential Southern California city has grown into the nation's second largest metropolis as well as one of America's leading tourist destinations. The glamour of Hollywood, the opulence of Beverly Hills, and the constantly warm climate of the Pacific Ocean beaches are just a few of the reasons why visitors from throughout the globe flock to this centre of fame and fortune.

Guests may even have the opportunity to bump into celebrity guests during their stay at luxury five-star Beverly Hills retreats such as The Beverly Hills Hotel - Beverly Hills or the famous Beverly Wilshire – Beverly Hills Four Seasons establishment. However, those who'd rather remain in the heart of the bustling Los Angeles central business district can also stay in the lap of luxury at the iconic Ritz-Carlton, now part of the city's thriving L.A. Live entertainment complex.

Sights nearby

Disneyland, one of the area's most beloved tourist attractions, is actually situated a fair distance from Los Angeles proper in neighbouring Orange County. Although cars remain the easiest way to explore most of this car-centred city, coastal Santa Monica is one of the area's most scenic and pedestrian-friendly communities.

Disneyland Resort
Disneyland may be situated 40kms from central Los Angeles in the Orange County city of Anaheim, but most visitors believe the world's first theme park is worth the freeway journey. The eight original 'lands' of Walt Disney's first theme park remain as popular as when they greeted their first guests in 1955, but they are now joined by the much more modern Disney California Adventure park. The newer park was opened in 2001 to showcase California's culture and history.

Santa Monica
The historic Route 66 and modern Interstate 10 may both end in Santa Monica, but this seaside retreat's Third Street Promenade is among the few Southern California attractions which are friendlier towards pedestrians than cars. This popular people watching and shopping spot is just a few blocks away from Santa Monica's other signature attraction, its namesake beach and pier. This coastal city also enjoys a slightly cooler climate than its inland neighbours during the hottest summer months.

Malibu
One of the world's most scenic stretches of road, the Pacific Coast Highway, serves at the main street of this world famous beachside community. This breathtaking view is one of the main reasons why so many celebrities choose to live in this surfing and sunbathing paradise. The Malibu Lagoon's legendary point break is an unforgettable place for surfers and those who enjoy watching them. The trails of Highlands Park lead to some of Southern California's most scenic cliffside views.

Eating and drinking and shopping nearby

Rodeo Drive on Beverly Hills may be known as the world's most expensive street, but luxurious designer boutiques also form a large percentage of the shops on the Beverly Center's eight floors. The largest Los Angeles shopping centre is also a popular celebrity sighting spot. Rooftop hotel bars are among the city's most luxurious nightlife offerings, but live music fans may prefer the more informal atmosphere at the Sunset Strip's iconic Whisky and Roxy venues. Chinatown's Bamboo Lane, Olvera Street's many Mexican restaurants, and Little Tokyo's stream of sushi bars are just a few of the city's unique culinary offerings.

Public transport

Los Angeles may be one of the world's most car-centric large cities, but there are public transit options for those wishing to avoid the city's notorious freeway gridlock. The Metro and Dash bus networks are most recommended for short daytime trips. The light Metro Rail network, while limited, is still within easy reach of several tourist attractions.
