the great location and friendly helpful staff made our stay in San Francisco most pleasant. We would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to stay near union square.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Hi Danny, Thanks for choosing the Drake! I couldn't agree with you more on our location. Union Square is where all the "happenings" are year-around. We hope you enjoyed your trip to SF and see you soon at the Drake! Regards, Jim Gross, General Manager
Where do I start. Our first night there was absolutely shocking. We got there and we were put into a room that was next to the elevators, small, and had no sun-exposure. Our toilet-roll holder was broken with the holder being placed on the sink - this was fixed easily once staff were contacted but how did house-keeping not notice or fix this prior to […] our arrival. The wifi was not functioning in the room (but functioning in the lobby): we had to speak to reception staff 3 times and all times they advised us to contact IT ourselves! We spent the first night with no wifi in our room. The next day, apparently IT were supposed to reset the system, but this did not fix the problem. The hotel staff were aware of similar problem with other guests and yet they made us contact IT ourselves. Eventually we spoke to a 4th reception staff who changed us to another room. This other room was much better, with functioning wifi, felt roomy and had plenty of sun-exposure. The only thing was the bathroom door did not shut properly. Be aware of the $55/day parking fee, however, you can park at a fraction of that amount off Stutter Street (next block over). Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Hello, Thanks for the feedback. As I read your disappointing experience, I, too was disappointed that our a simple thing like a toilet paper holder was not properly placed. This is something I will bring up to my Housekeeping Director. Also, our valet is owned/managed by a 3rd party and our fee is compatible to other hotels in the same vicinity. As for our WiFi solution, as we speak, we are in a process of getting our its connectivity upgraded so that none of our guests should experience what you did. Sincerely, Jim Gross, General Manager
"Great location, comfortable room"
Good room, very clean, well decorated, small bathroom. Bit over priced I thought but wouldn't rule out staying there again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Dear Andrew, Thanks for the review. The location of the Drake is definitely one of the most convenient. We also went through a major renovation in 2011 to give a bit of lift to our historic building. Sounds like you enjoyed your visit to SF. Hope to welcome you back soon. Sincerely, Jim Gross, General Manager
"Location Location Location"
Great location, right in the heart of the city @ Union Square. The hotel was beautiful, took us to an era gone by and impeccably maintained. The inly complaint I have is about the size of rooms, they were a bit cramped.Genuine Expedia guest review
Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Dear Rahul, The Drake was built in 1928 and we recently completed a renovation. We have preserved the prohibition room in the hotel which can be toured upon request. If you missed it during your last trip, hope you'll get to see it on your next trip to SF. Sincerely, Jim Gross, General Manager
"We recommend this hotel to friends"
We have stayed several times at this hotel, and we have recommended it to friends. One of the main features is its location. It is located close to Union Square and has easy access to the whole of the old downtown area. We opted this time for a larger room, and think that the extra cost was worth it. The facilities are fine, perhaps just a little on […] the old and close to tacky side. When we arrive in the early morning at hotels, we nearly always book the night before. We did not do that this time, since we arrived at 1.45 in the afternoon, only to be told that the official check-in time was 3 pm. The desk person was just a bit officious in the way he handled this, although we recognize that it is reasonably standard that hotels have a 3 pm book in time (we were not pleased after a 14 hour flight, however). In our time in San Francisco some years ago, the wonderful view in the afternoon from the Starlight Roof was a highlight, and it is too bad that it only opens now at 6 pm (although the layout seems improved on our stay a couple of years ago). What you get from this hotel is location and a reasonable line of service & facilities. Obviously, there are better hotels in SF, but most cost a bit more money, and none will beat this location. Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Dear Kenny, First off, I appreciate your loyalty and recommending the Drake to your friends! Our location is definitely one of the reasons why many guests from around the world choose us to stay. Union Square is just a step away, so is the Cable Car; Chinatown, Financial District and BART station are all within walking distance from us. Please know that whenever possible and rooms are available, we often allow our guests to check in earlier than 3pm. Lastly, thanks for checking out the Starlight Room. The view from the 21st floor is beautiful, isn't it? Hope to see you back at the Drake!
the Sir Francis Drake makes itself proud - this is a wonderful hotel from the moment you step out of your cab to the moment you speak to the staff. the staff are very knowledgeable, we booked a tour through them. Also they are incredibly accommodating - I was travelling with my mum and we landed in San Francisco at 6am, arriving at the Sir Francis Drake […] at about 8 am (WAY before check in time), suffering from a horrible cold I went to check in and the staff managing the reception was very accommodating and offered us a room immediately. the rooms are tastefully furnished, quite large, very clean, beautiful linen and bedding (I could be wrong but i'm pretty sure they have feather pillows and quilts). They provide complimentary tea and coffee at the downstairs bar. I didn't get a chance to go to the bar, but it was highly frequented. Very impressed with this hotel, the only hotel I have stayed at that has exceeded this one would be the Four Seasons in Sydney. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Francis Drake in May"
The hotel was very central. Perfect to get around San Francisco from. Great Area in which to shop. Did wish they have some hotel computers you can access the internet on and in house laundry facilities. Otherwise no complaints.Genuine Expedia guest review
The first night was in a room next to the elevator - noisy. We requested a room change for the following three nights. They did so with no problems - pleased with their service.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Its ok, but don't expect 5 stars."
The Hotel it self is in a great spot, right near Union Square with the Powell St trolley out front. The staff were somewhat welcoming, well some staff were better than others. A couple of times I was complete ignored at reception. However when they did decide to talk to you, they were friendly to a degree. The foyer & lobby has been refurbished quite […] nicely and is a comfortable place to sit and have a drink. The room has been refurbished quite well, the air conditioner was very noisy and I had to wear earplugs. The shower had someone's hair in it, like someone just had a haircut and there was a fair bit of mould or similar in the corners of the shower. Needed a really good clean. There is also no storage for your vanity needs, as the sink is a standalone bowl with no vanity space. Other than that, it was an enjoyable stay. I rarely spent anytime in the Hotel as we had so much to do in San Fran. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Great location, great rooms & great bar"
We had a great time - the hotel is in a great location to walk almost anywhere in SF - so close to shops and everything so it's a great base. The hotel was very nice, extremely clean, rooms were a decent size and bed was really comfy. The hotel bar is a great stopping point for a couple of drinks before heading out!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Right by Union Square, this hotel was clean, comfortable (the king bed was amazing) and it had a great vibe. The cable cars out the front are a tad loud but take you right to Fisherman's Wharf which is very handy. Concierge was helpful and loaded with brochures and information regarding San Fran. The room itself wasn't huge but considering the amount […] of things to do here you won't be spending too much time in the room. Wifi signal was weak but did the job. All in all recommended for all travellers!! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

Amazing hotel in a fantastic location. All staff within this hotel were absolutely lovely and VERY accommodating. Staff suggested places for us to eat, booked our tours to Yosemite and even gave us advice on our next destination Las Vegas. Would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone! "Sir Francis Drake - central & worth it."
Travelling from Brisbane, Australia, I recently stayed with my teenage son & his friend for 4 days at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel as part of our California holiday. With the many options for accomodation in San Francisco, we are extremely pleased with our stay at Sir Francis Drake. The location is excellent, with the convenience of shopping, cable cars […] & eating places and the tourist attractions being close at hand. Having the Beefeater doormen at the front of the Sir Francis Drake was a tourist bonus that the boys appreciated. I love the character of the hotel and the ambience that permeates throughout the hotel. I rate the service of all staff we dealt with as first class. We got a reasonable rate through expedia to stay at the hotel, which is slightly more than other rates that I paid at other locations that we stayed at, but definitely worth it, considering our limited time in this wonderful city. "Comfortable, Classy, Central"
I wanted somewhere central and comfortable upon arrival in San Francisco after 24 hours of transit. I got what I paid for. This place has class, vibe and charm. Quality furnishings; a mixture of modern and old-fashioned. Very comfy bed. Fast and reliable wifi. Hot water with good pressure. The toilet got blocked and they unblocked it and cleaned up […] very quickly for me. Only thing is that their restaurant and room service menu was a little limited and pricey. Would have been good to see a breakfast buffet or a continental deal for this kind of place. Also would have appreciated a kettle to make my own cup of tea. But on the other hand this place is super central and their are food options galore within 5 minutes of the hotel. Other than that - can't really fault the place :) Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Fun in SF!"
The drake was great! Comfortable, clean. Leban the doorman was really helpful! In a great part of town, easy access to the powell st cable car to fishermans wharf, also and enjoyable walk across town through Chinatown, little Italy, up Lombard street, down to fishermans wharf! I recommend it!Genuine Expedia guest review
"Be aware of the room noise!"
Great location! Rooms were very noisy. Had an adjoining room. Had to call manager 3 times to keep the other guests quiet. We stayed 6 nights. Ok if you are passing through fot 1 or 2 nights. - Australian travelers.Genuine Expedia guest review
Spacious spotlessly clean room and staff are helpful and friendly. Great bar and the hotel is handy to shopping, restaurants and things to do. Would definitely stay here again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Bring your own towel!"
When we arrived there was only one towel in the room, three calls to housekeeping and two days later we get another towel. Then when they serviced the room they took our bath mat and never replaced, with a leaking shower this was not good!! The bathroom is tiny!! seriously tiny, my husband could not fit on the loo sitting straight, he had to bend his […] legs to the side to fit in behind the door. The night club upstairs attracts so many people from outside the hotel that on Friday or Saturday night you have to que to get into the lift just to get to your room. The bar downstairs has very good cocktails but they line the bar with chairs which fill up quick each day and then you cannot get to the bar to order a drink, we did not notice any table service so we had one drink then gave up, only to discover they charged us for 4 on our room bill (they did amend on check out which was good) Overall the decor is very nice. I was quite impressed by the room, and the night club upstairs is amazing, no wonder it is popular. The door men out the front are so very helpful and kind, they are the best part about the whole experience. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"An clean and enjoyable hotel in downtown San Fran"
We stayed for four nights and checked in during the early hours of Monday morning. Helpful staff that checked us in and organised for bags to be delivered to the room. The room itself was definitely clean. We have a two year old, but didn't inquire about a baby cot. On the eighth level, we did hear a little bit of street noise. The rooms are also quite […] small. However, the location is a definite bonus, being so close to Union Square. The doormen are friendly and helpful. I would definitely stay again and recommend to others. I had requested for room with views which I did get, however just remember if you do get placed on the 20th floor, bear in mind there is the lounge bar upstairs (floor 21) and you can hear pretty much everything in your room. Not recommended if you're wanting peace and quiet in your room. Location is great, however avoid 20th floor if you can.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Nice hotel ina great location"
The hotel was lovely and our room vas very nice. The main gripe was the lack of follow up from the staff and they forgot our 5am wake up call making us rush to cath the bus in the morning.Genuine Expedia guest review

Great location and very friendly staff at the hotel. Check in was easy and a few complimentary drinks was a nice touch. - Easy to shuttle from the airport to this hotel. - Very central/convenient to connect to public transport (Union Square, tour buses, cable cars, trams). - Friendly and very helpful staff, knowledgable concierge. - Free internet if you signup with Kimpton (it's on their intranet). - Hotel has a nice antique and authentic feel to it. - Room (standard […] queen size bed) was a bit small but still could fit a queen bed and 2 large suitcases laid flat on the floor. - Very clean room with modern lcd tv/furniture, decent sized bathroom, comfortable bed - overall very happy; hotel deserves its 4 star rating! "Sir Francis Drake - Great amenity for the price"
Although the rooms are on the small side, and getting a bit tired, you just can't argue with the convenience of this hotel. Visually stunning and very beautiful hotel. Unfortunately the beds are very hard and uncomfortable. "Historic, yes, Worth the cost, NO!"
Friendly staff and great location, but that's where it ends. The Historic Queen rooms are claustrophobic at best. I managed to get a handicapped room which wasn't much better. It took forever for hot water in the sink, and it was lukewarm once it came. Water pressure in the shower was horrendous. Had to call for fresh towels. Biggest reason I stayed […] here was for access to the Starlight Room. The website stated it was open to the public all 4 days I was supposed to be there. Well, 3 of the 4 days ot was closed for private events, and the last day when it was finally open, there was a $20 per person cover charge even if you stayed at the hotel. Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Hello Chris, I appreciate your feedback on your stay. Our Historic Queen is the smallest of the rooms we have at the Drake. I'm uncertain which room you were relocated to, but there are several types of rooms that are much bigger than the room you initially stayed. As for our Starlight Room closure, I appreciate your bringing this to my attention. Although, some of the private event booking in the Starlight Room may be last minute, my staff and I are trying to make our guests become aware of the potential Starlight Room closure (especially during our upcoming holiday season) in advance on our reservation web site. Our aim is to make your stay as pleasant as possible and hope you'll give us another try. Regards, Jim Gross, General Manager
